“Honoris Causa”
(Honorary Doctorate)

An ‘Honorary Doctorate Degree’ is an academic degree for which a University or any Institution has waived all of the usual requirements like matriculation, attendance, course credits, a dissertation and the passing of comprehensive examinations. It is also known by the Latin phrases ‘honoris causa (for the sake of the honour)’ or ‘ad honorem (to the honour).’

The degree is typically a doctorate or less commonly, a master’s degree, and may be awarded to someone who has no prior connection with the academic institution or no previous postsecondary education. It’s awarded to distinguished individuals who have achieved pre-eminence in their profession, or who have contributed significantly to the development of their country / society. They are often given to those who have either made contributions to a certain field, or more commonly as a “thank you” to those who have made large donations to the institution. The conferment of honorary doctorates brings with it goodwill and contribute towards building up a network of research and other academic collaborations. Our honorary award holders are a source of inspiration to our graduates and provide positive role models for their future.Honorary doctorates are conferred honoris causa, “for the sake of honour”.

The bylaws of Senate provide for an honorary degrees committee which has the task of encouraging and recommending nominees for honorary degrees, and submitting names to the Senate for consideration for honorary degrees. The bylaws provide that degrees honoris causa may be conferred at any Convocation provided that the names of such persons shall have been considered and approved by the honorary degrees committee, and shall have been recommended by the Senate.

Frequently Asked Questions? (FAQ)

1. What are Honorary Doctorates?
An honorary doctorate is a high-level academic recognition granted by a university to a recipient without completion of the normal requirements for that degree. Universities grant them to honor the recipient, while also benefiting the university by association. Recipients sometimes have no relationship with the universities, no prior degrees, and no formal higher education; though on occasion they might already have substantial education and other doctorates.
2. What is the difference between a Regular and Honorary Doctorate?
A regular degree, you can use for academic improvement like joining a higher course Doctor of Letters (D.Litt) / Doctor of Science (D.Sc) / PDF. An Honorary Doctor is a status symbol it cannot be used for promotion, increment, etc.
3. Can I use the title "Dr" before my name is it legal?
Yes, it is fully legal throughout the world, it can be even apostilled as any regular degree. You have to use the title as follows for example Dr. Sunil Kumar Bajaj, Ph.D. (hc)/Dr(hc). Sunil Kumar Bajaj. "hc" stands for Honoris Causa means for the sake of honor.
4. For the award of an Honorary Doctorate is the university be recognized by the government of any country?
Sure, then only it will be legal.
5. Can I verify the government registration documents of the university physically?
Mostly the answer is "No", although there are some restrictions by the government regarding this, some universities may ask for a refundable deposit for this verification as the information can be misused.
6. How to find whether the university is real or a degree mill?
If it is real, it should not only grant Honorary Doctorate but also regular degrees with a standard international course curriculum. It should have an examination system and a library of international standards.

10. Is it essential that the university is recognized by the local government in your country?
As a matter of fact, the government of your country of origin has nothing to do with the rights of an international university which is a legal entity in the country in which it is chartered.
